Renewable Energy Technology

Below is an overview of some of the typical areas where renewable energy technology solutions can be applied. This is an indication of the type of opportunities available to you.

  • Wind energy

  • Small hydropower plants

  • Solar Energy

  • Biomass

  • Biogas production and utilisation

  • Geothermal energy and heat pumps

Renewable energy investments to switch from centralised to private supply:

In cases like this the investment to produce either biogas, electricity or heat (or all three) simply substitutes for some or all of the energy previously purchased from the centralised supply, or which is produced in-house. The cost of the investment is recovered from the savings from the energy not purchased from the centralised supply, a cheaper fuel, or a more efficient energy producing process. Decisions about fuel inputs, choice of technology, operation, reliability standards, and purchase of the energy are all made by the same organization, reducing the need for coordination among decision-makers, which significantly reduces the risk.

Some examples of renewable energy projects for own energy supply are:

  • Animal waste bio-digesters producing gas for CHP generation

  • Solar water heating for process hot water supply

  • Waste wood boilers for heat or CHP

  • On-site hydro or wind generation

  • Geothermal resources for heating or (if hot enough for steam) for electricity generation, and even for cooling (with absorption refrigeration).
